How does a boy without a father grow up to be a man? How does he learn to make the hard decisions he's going to have to make in life, the ones only a man can teach?

About This Quote

In this quote from Confucius, he speaks about the importance of having a father figure. Having someone to look up to and learn from will help a boy grow into a well rounded young man. In today’s society, men are often looked at as being strong and tough. Confucius was speaking of a man being well rounded because he had all the knowledge and wisdom to make good decisions in life.

Confucius believed that knowledge was power and to have all the knowledge in one’s possession would give a person an advantage over others. He believed if a boy only had a father figure, the boy would never grow into a well rounded young man. Confucius was not saying that boys could not learn from other men or that men should not be role models for boys.

In Confucius’s eyes, these roles should go hand in hand.
